Tried And Tested Tips On How To Help A Teenager Lose Weight

One of the powerful things when it comes to losing weight is your motivation.

It takes effort to lose weight by eating and exercising right and it’s this “internal fire” that keeps you going and prevents you from slipping back into bad habits.

If you’re looking for tips on how to help a teenager lose weight I assume you have a concern about a child, niece or nephew and helping them lose weight.

If they already have this motivation then the hardest part is already out of the way and helping a teenager adopt the necessary exercise and dietary regime to lose weight should prove much easier for you.

If you’re trying to convince them to lose weight then you’ll need a whole bag of tricks to try and get them on your side - and therefore have both of you facing in the same direction.

The first thing to try is a serious discussion about why they should lose weight and how you’re concerned about their health.

Whilst this will help understand each other’s point of view and come closer to consensus it’s unlikely to provide enough motivation to get them going strongly so here are a few more ideas.

Consider bribing your teenager to turn their weight loss into a win-win situation for you both.

As an example, how about promising to buy them something they’re desperate for (an XBox, Play Station, car etc.) once they’ve achieved a certain weight?

Or allowing them to stay out late on a Friday night or paying for pizza for them and their friends so long as they lose 2lb or 3lb or whatever you decide is fair each week.

And keep records yourself - don’t let them tell you how they’ve done!

Sometimes we can also burn fat but put on muscle so whilst we’ve got slimmer and healthier we may not lose much weight as revealed by your bathroom scales so consider waist size or body fat percentage as equally valid measurements to make.

Consider also taking photographs. Whilst your teen will likely hate this idea it’s amazing a few weeks or months after starting a new diet to see how different you look to what you did at the beginning.

Once you’ve found something they’re passionate about that will help spur them on, and have set realistic targets it’s time for the diet and the exercise.

Try to make this as easy and enjoyable as possible for your teenager to maximize your chances of success.

Encourage school and extra curricular sporting activities. Offer to pay for those new Nike trainers they want if they join the basketball team and play for a season.

Heck, take them exercising yourself such as taking them to the swimming baths on weekends and in the school holidays.

Go for family bike rides. Go play soccer in the park and so on.

Make it “fun” rather than hard work for your teen to get exercise.

Add to this a healthy diet and your teenager will soon find it easy to lose weight - and think how rewarding it will be and how the experience will likely bring you further together.
