How To Lose Weight By Running
Running is one of the best ways to lose weight in my opinion and is the technique I tend to use for my aerobic exercise and having seen the results that I and others like me have received from running I highly recommend you consider adding it to your fitness regime.
No expensive gym memberships or equipment are required to partake in running though some sensible running shoes are recommended as are breathable clothing.
Decent running shoes will have sensible grips to ensure you don’t slip if it’s wet and thick rubbery soles to cushion the impact on your ankles and knees when running on solid surfaces like tarmac.
They should also support the rest of your foot well while allowing you a decent range of movement.
Wear them with at least one pair of socks to minimize the chances of blisters appearing on your feet.
I also used Reebok t-shirt and shorts that were very reasonably priced and are stylish yet breathable and so wick sweat away from my body keeping me feeling comfortable when out running.
The choice is up to you but there are also 3 other pieces of equipment I use.
The first is a sweat band on my wrist to wipe sweat from my face, a watch with a stopwatch on it to time myself and a basketball cap which serves to shield my face from the heat of the summer or the rain of the winter.
If you’re really pushing it in the summer it is easy to overheat - just watch a marathon on TV to see plenty of it - so this protection can be a real lifesaver.
Lastly if it is very hot I will take a bottle of water or isotonic drink and sip gently throughout a run.
Some people will have you believe that the further you run, the better. That you’re only going to lose weight if you run half marathons each weekend.
Recent research refutes this.
Before we discuss it further - consider this situation…
Think about the difference in physiques between a long distance runner and a 100 metre sprinter.
The first is thin and has little muscle or “shape” to their bodies.
The second tend to be muscular and toned and generally “more attractive” to look at.
When I was at school an elderly English teacher of mine who looked like butter wouldn’t melt in her mouth used to openly lust over big black muscular sprinters and religiously watch the Olypics when they were due on!
So the difference is intensity and distance. To lose weight effectively by running therefore the best plan is to run for shorter periods of time at higher intensities.
Try running for just 20-30 minutes a session, varying the pace whenever possible. Regularly speed up and slow down, change the length of your pace, lift your knees high, then leave them low so you’re constantly changing and adapting and so keeping your body guessing.
3-5 sessions like this each week on an empty stomach is how to lose weight running.
