How Many Calories Should You Eat To Lose Weight?
The number of calories you need to eat on a daily basis depends on a variety of factors such as how much exercise you get, how much you weigh and your sex.
So the bad news is that there is no real “ballpark” figure I can give you that applies to everyone - that is a figure you can take and run with.
Of course, there is an agreed way to calculate your own calorific needs on a daily basis and the aim of weight loss is to consume slightly less than you use so encouraging your body to burn fat from your fat reserves which consequently leads to fat loss, weight loss and a new, slimmer you.
It’s important to say that this “deficit” figure should only be slightly less than the calories you actually use. Too few calories in comparison to what you need can be dangerous and can actually lead to you losing less weight than you could have by putting your body under too much tension.
So let’s get calculating on average how many calories you need to lose weight.
For women, take your body weight in pounds (lb), multiply it by 11 and multiply that answer by 1.4.
So if you weigh 120lbs you would need (120×11)x1.4 = around 1850 calories a day and this figure assumes you will be exercising on a regular basis.
If you are less active you should drop this figure down. And push it up if you’re doing a lot of exercise - such as training to run a marathon.
For men the calculation is just the same except you multiply your weight by 12 rather than 11.
So a 160lb man would need (160×12)x1.4 = roughly 2700 calories per day.
Knock around 10% off this final calculation so you are consuming on average fewer calories than you are burning and you will soon find it easy to lose weight.
So do your calculations and grab a copy of a booklet containing the calories in most common foods and you’re well away.
Just make sure you get these calories from healthy, wholesome foods rather than chocolate and burgers!
